Modelling workshop, Birmingham

The Modelling workshop at Aston Conference Centre, Birmingham. JISC’s Community Engagement team gave an introduction to modelling. Main themes:

Soft Modelling = no formal system, use your own notation. Emphasis on the process of thinking about the processes of modelling.

Hard Modelling = UML, BPMN, ArchiMate.

Then Bill gave a curtailed talk on modelling and got us to do another exercise which I didn’t understand:

I was thinking about the new ArchiMate tool:

  • Is there any way we could make it different to the existing tools? What could be our USP rather than just making a low-rent version of another tool? An “easy” mode? Let it unfold like an Apple app.
  • We have to use the GMF framework rather than using POJOs and GEF because of sustainability. By using GMF it becomes extensible. POJOs and GEF would be quicker for me in the short term but not so good in the long term.
